I chose to take a placement year because, although I really enjoyed studying law at university, I wanted to gain practical experience and see how the law operates in a real-world setting. Studying law provides a strong academic foundation, but I was eager to understand what a career in the legal profession actually looks like on a day-to-day basis.
A placement year offered the perfect opportunity to bridge the gap between theory and practice. Having particularly enjoyed Land Law at university, I was keen to see how the legal principles I had studied translated into day-to-day work within a conveyancing department. Alongside developing my interest in property law, the placement allowed me to gain valuable experience in a fast-paced legal environment and develop the professional skills that cannot be learned in a primarily academic setting.
Benefits for My Studies
One of the biggest benefits of my placement year is that I will return to my studies with a much broader perspective. Having worked in a professional legal environment, I now understand how legal concepts are applied in real situations and can appreciate issues from a variety of viewpoints rather than just an academic perspective.
My time management and organisational skills have improved significantly, as balancing multiple tasks and meeting deadlines has become part of my daily routine. I have also learned the importance of consistency and maintaining high standards in everything I do.
Another key skill I have developed is attention to detail. When reviewing and drafting legal documents, contracts and forms, accuracy is essential. Even small mistakes can have significant consequences, so I have learned to approach my work carefully and thoroughly. This is a skill I will undoubtedly carry forward into my final year of study.
The experience has also strengthened my decision-making and judgement. Throughout the year, I have developed greater confidence in trusting my instincts, analysing situations and making informed decisions. These are skills that will continue to support me both academically and professionally.
On a more personal level, the placement has helped me believe in my own abilities far more than I did before. Starting in a professional legal environment was initially daunting, but over the year I have become much more confident in my knowledge and capabilities. Being trusted with responsibility and seeing my own progress has shown me that I am capable of succeeding in a professional setting, which is something I will take back into my studies and future career.
Experiences Gained at T&T
My placement at T&T has provided me with a wide range of experiences that have helped me develop both personally and professionally.
One of the most valuable aspects of my placement has been client communication. Working within a high street law firm allowed me to build close professional relationships with clients and gain a greater understanding of the importance of delivering a personal and approachable service. I regularly liaised with clients, helping to manage day-to-day communication and ensuring queries were handled professionally and efficiently. Through these interactions, I developed stronger interpersonal skills and learned how to communicate effectively with individuals from a variety of backgrounds, often during what could be a significant periods in their lives. This experience has significantly improved my confidence when speaking with people, building professional relationships and providing a high standard of client care.
I have also gained experience communicating with third parties, including solicitors, estate agents and other professionals. Learning how to communicate effectively and professionally with different individuals has been an important part of my development.
Working at T&T has also given me a greater understanding of legal concepts, particularly in relation to property matters and title documentation. Being able to apply knowledge from my studies to real cases has reinforced my learning and helped me gain a deeper understanding of legal principles.
In addition, I have had opportunities to assist with drafting legal documents and reviewing important paperwork. These experiences have strengthened my legal skills and provided practical insight into the work carried out within a law firm every day.
Another invaluable part of my placement has been the opportunity to learn from experienced colleagues. Observing senior conveyancers and listening to how they approach matters, communicate with clients and resolve complex issues has given me insights that simply cannot be taught in a classroom. Being able to watch experienced professionals at work has helped me better understand what makes an effective legal practitioner and has provided an excellent example of the standards I hope to achieve in my own career.
Advice for Students Considering a Placement Year
If you are thinking about undertaking a placement year, I would strongly recommend it. The experience you gain is unlike anything you can learn at University and provides invaluable insight into the professional world.
One piece of advice I would give is not to be afraid to ask questions. Everyone understands that you are there to learn, and asking for help is one of the best ways to develop your knowledge and skills. You cannot learn effectively if you are afraid to seek guidance when needed.
I would also recommend keeping a notebook or maintaining a to-do list. Staying organised is essential when managing multiple tasks and responsibilities and having a system in place helps ensure that nothing is overlooked.
Another important piece of advice is to make the most of every opportunity. Be proactive, volunteer to help where you can, and take advantage of the experiences available to you. The more involved you are, the more you will learn.
Finally, be sociable. Building relationships with colleagues not only makes the experience more enjoyable but also helps you learn from those around you and become part of the team.
Honest Reflection on the Year
Looking back, I can honestly say that undertaking a placement year was one of the best decisions I have made during my university journey.
There were certainly challenges along the way, particularly at the beginning of my placement. Adjusting to a professional working environment was a significant learning curve, and I initially found many of the legal processes and terminology unfamiliar and sometimes confusing. I vividly remember creating my own list of legal terms and jargon to refer back to so that I could understand what was being discussed.
Over time, however, my knowledge and confidence grew, and tasks that once seemed daunting became second nature. Managing responsibilities, learning new skills and adapting to workplace expectations required time and effort, but these challenges ultimately helped me develop both personally and professionally.
I am especially grateful for the support, guidance, and encouragement I received throughout the year. The advice shared by colleagues and supervisors was invaluable, and I greatly appreciated the trust that was placed in me. Being given meaningful responsibilities and the opportunity to contribute to real legal work helped me build confidence in my abilities and develop a stronger sense of independence. Looking back, the confidence I have gained compared to when I first started is one of the most valuable outcomes of the placement.
Most importantly, the year has provided me with skills, knowledge and experiences that I simply could not have gained through academic study alone. I am returning to university with a much greater understanding of the legal profession, increased confidence in my capabilities and a stronger foundation for my future career.
